REDWOOD COAST CUUPS at the Humboldt UU Fellowship

For many generations, modern Pagans and others drawn to earth-centered spiritual traditions have come together in regular circle gatherings to celebrate the turning of the seasons and our deep connection with the natural world. For many of us the customs of casting the circlecalling the quarters, and raising energy are familiar and comfortable. In recent years, a growing number of Humboldt UUs, families, and friends in the wider community have been inspired to learn more about, and perhaps participate more deeply in, the classical Pagan and neo-Pagan ritual traditions from which these practices are drawn.

It was in response to this growing enthusiasm for creating Pagan community that the Redwood Coast chapter of the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans, or CUUPS, was founded in October 2018 at the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

CUUPS was chartered at the UUA General Assembly in 1987, anticipating the addition to the UU Statement of Principles in 1995 of the Sixth Source which confirms one of the sources of the living UU tradition to be:

Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.”

As described on the web site, among the purposes of the CUUPS organization are “educating people about Paganism, promoting interfaith dialogue…and developing Pagan liturgies and theologies”. CUUPS is also committed to outreach in the wider community, encouraging creative experience through ritual worship and celebration, and the support of earth-compatible human behavior and social justice.

Redwood Coast CUUPS is also dedicated to exploring the deep compatibility that naturally exists between contemporary Pagan Nature-based spiritual practices and the religious values and principles inherent in Unitarian Universalist worship. Membership in CUUPS and invitations to participate in CUUPS activities are open to anyone who expresses affinity for the religious and social philosophies of the Unitarian Universalist fellowship.
