Music Ministry
At Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, we believe that music and song are powerful spiritual practices that connect us to one another, our faith, and the world around us. Singing together is an act of community, uplifting our spirits and deepening our sense of connection as we explore life’s meaning and purpose through song.
Come sing with us and be part of something joyful, meaningful, and community-centered. We look forward to making music together!
Fellowship Choir
The Fellowship Choir welcomes anyone who loves to sing; no experience is necessary. The focus of rehearsals will be healthy beautiful singing and will include learning new repertoire for sharing, building the voice of each individual and the collective voice of the ensemble. Sharing ones spiritual journey in song enriches the discovery and weaves the many paths into uplifting beauty. All are Welcome!
Choir Director Kay Raplenovich moved to Eureka in 2023 and began searching for a home in a spiritual community. HUUF has claimed her heart and has provided a venue for sharing her art. Before retiring, Kay was a classical singer performing as a recitalist and a soloist in operas and orchestra works. She has taught classical voice at university and in an active home studio as well as directing numerous volunteer choirs. Kay believes that the voice is the expression of the soul with the instrument we carry in our bodies. She has dedicated much of her being to guiding folks to healthy beautiful singing. When not making music Kay loves to gather with her son’s family, garden, weave, cook and walk her ancient dog on the beach.
Fellowship Choir meets every Wednesday at 6:45 in the library and shares in service once a month.
Voices for Palestine
Voices for Palestine is a community choir project dedicated to lifting hearts, soothing ragged nervous systems and uniting our voices for the peace and liberation of Palestine.
We gather as a way to fortify and deepen our activism and co-create a place to gather with those who have had our hearts broken open by the ongoing genocide in Gaza. To those looking for a way to raise your voice and find others doing the work of advocacy and allyship: WE WELCOME YOU.
We meet on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, 1-3 pm, with occasional schedule changes, so be sure to check the calendar.
No previous musical experience is necessary. Just a desire to open your heart, and offer up a living, singing prayer for the people of Palestine. May our efforts be for their benefit, and for all those moved by this ongoing devastation.
Our choir is co-led by Sarah Hogan and Amy Day. For more information, contact Amy at minister@huuf.org
Community Song Circles
“Group singing is a powerful catalyst for social change and community building. We sing for the joy of creating something beautiful together in the moment.” Maggie McKnight
Community song circles welcome all voices, bringing together people who love to sing, regardless of experience level. Song circles don’t focus on performing for an audience; instead, learn songs from a variety of traditions by call-and-response, and sing for the joy of creating something beautiful together in the moment. Group singing is a powerful way of connecting with each other, and with something deep within ourselves—and the music we make as we support each other through song calls forth the singing voice that is every human’s birthright. This transformative experience is open to ALL -invite your friends!
Our Song Circle meets every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month from 4-5:30pm at the Fellowship with occasional schedule changes, so be sure to check the calendar.
As part of the Fellowship’s Music Ministry program, we’d like to encourage your participation in these circles led by Maggie McKnight. Maggie grew up singing harmonies with her family and studying classical piano and violin alongside bluegrass fiddle. She has sung and played in various choirs and musical groups over the years, and since 2013 has been leading community song circles and helping people reconnect with the joy of singing. She was the musical director of the Arcata Threshold Choir for 8 years, and is a firm believer that singing is everybody’s birthright. She lives with her wife and two daughters in Arcata.
