"Where Olive Trees Weep" Film Screening

07/30/2024 at 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Buy your $10 tickets here

About the event

In a time of metacrisis, with spiraling catastrophes all around us, how do we find our bearings and reclaim our agency? Our hearts have been broken open by the genocide taking place in Gaza. And we want a place to share our grief, hear the stories of the humans who are living inside this, and learn ways we can support them at this time. It has been said that “Grief is love that has nowhere to go”. Come, let your grief be held inside this powerful container, and let your love find the form of renewed action and connection.

About the film

Where Olive Trees Weep offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss, trauma, and the quest for justice. We follow, among others, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We witness Dr. Gabor Maté offering trauma-healing work for a group of women who have been tortured in Israeli prisons. Ancient landscapes bear deep scars, having witnessed the brutal reality of ancestral land confiscation, expulsions, imprisonment, home demolitions, water deprivation, and denial of basic human rights. Yet, through the veil of oppression, we catch a glimpse of resilience—deep roots that have carried the Palestinian people through decades of darkness and shattered lives. This emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty?

We will gather in the sanctuary/main hall. If you’d like to bring drinks or snacks to enjoy while you watch, please feel free. However, we ask no alcohol at this event.

Help us make food for the unhoused.

Every first and third Friday at the Fellowship, we meet from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. as part of our ongoing partnership with McKinleyville’s Church of the Joyful Healer. Each Saturday, they offer a warm meal, bag lunch, hot coffee, and a place to get warm for folks experiencing homelessness. Join us as we make sandwiches and a yummy tray of burritos as part of this important community ministry. Come early (at 4:00) and join in the singalong fun happening in the HUUF Sanctuary with Maggie McKnight. We’d love to have you there. For more information, contact Amy at comm@huuf.org
