Introduction to Zen Buddhism Course for Youth and Young Adults

In partnership with the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Arcata Zen Group will be hosting an Introduction to Zen Buddhism course led by current head teacher: Gene Bush.

There are only 15 spots available, so please register by copying and completing the form below and emailing it to bellamy@huuf.org You will receive a confirmation email if you have been accepted into the course.

Arcata Zen Group practices the Soto Zen tradition of Buddhism. They provide a place for sitting meditation, or zazen, and the study of Buddha’s teachings. They emphasize applying our practice to everyday life, with a focus on social and environmental justice. They work to assure that all people who come to practice are seen and heard, respected and included. To learn more, please visit arcatazengroup.org.

Schedule:

  • Students will meet at Arcata Zen Group from 6:30pm-8pm on March 5, 2026 to learn about Zen Buddhism from Gene Bush, where he will be teaching proper techniques and show us the space. After this first meeting, students will practice on their own time until check-in.
  • Students are heavily encouraged to visit for zazen at least twice during this study period, there are 10 periods per week at the temple; their exact schedule can be found on their website.
  • Students will meet again for a check-in from 6:30-8 pm on April 2, 2026. For students who wish to further their experience, there is also an optional Extended Immersion Weekend: May 1st, 5:45 pm-8:30 pm to May 2nd, 7:30 am to 4 pm.

There is no accommodation or meals provided. Please wear comfortable clothes to sit in that do not contain signage.
