Being Prepared

October is ShakeOut month and November 5 is World Tsunami Awareness Day, the perfect time to talk about preparedness and the role individuals and the Fellowship can play in helping to create a disaster resilient community. Lori Dengler will give an overview of hazards, what could happen after an earthquake or flood in the Jacoby Creek area, fundamentals of personal preparedness, resources, and steps the Fellowship might explore to expand their role in preparedness and a disaster’s aftermath. Copies of the new edition of the Living On Shaky Ground preparedness magazine and tsunami brochures will be available.

Lori Dengler is an emeritus professor of geology at Cal Poly Humboldt and an expert in tsunami and earthquake hazards.  Since retiring in 2015, she continues to work on North Coast earthquake and tsunami preparedness efforts through the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group and nationally as a member of NOAA’s Tsunami Science Technical Advisory Panel.  She writes the weekly “Not My Fault” column in the Times-Standard.
